Ronald Reagan was a B-movie actor who went into politics, becoming governor of California and, from 1981 to 1989, president of the United States.
When Reagan left office in January 1989, he had a 68% approval rating, which matched that of Franklin D. Roosevelt, and later Bill Clinton, the highest rating of any outgoing president in the modern era.
Although he planned an active post-presidency, Reagan revealed in November 1994 that he had been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease earlier that year.
Thereafter, his informal public appearances became rarer as the disease progressed.
He died at his home on June 5, 2004.
His tenure was a realignment toward conservative policies in the United States, and he became an icon among conservatives. Historians' and the general public's assessment of his presidency place him among the top American presidents.
