While he was quietly watching a game of the New York Yankeeswhile he was quietly watching a Yankee game with a soda in one hand, a hamburger in the other and a NY cap on his head, grocer Jean-Charles noticed a group of Yankee fans in section 203 of the Yankee Stadium bleachers.
So, armed with a magnifying glass and his computer, he investigated to find out more!
These die-hard fans of NYC's flagship baseball team are the Bleachers Creatures!
Their creation dates back to the early 80's, around a certain Ali Ramirez, who would ring a big bell to start the fans cheering.
They are present at every home game, rain or shine, big game or not.
They are an integral part of Yankee Stadium, literally: there is a plaque for the first of the Creatures, Ali Ramirez, who died in 1996 in the seat he used to take.
Their name comes from the fact that the seats of the stadium (the old one) were made of wood and bleached by the sun.
A few years after their "official" creation, they started to chant the name of each player of the team on the field at the beginning of the home games (but also during important actions in the game). The baseball players respond by waving at them at the end of the "clamor". This is called the Roll Call.
The fun thing about the Roll Call is that each player responds in a different way, some show their muscles, others wave to their fans...
Of course, the Roll Call is reserved for the Yankees, the opposing players get a completely different treatment!
Just imagine if they had been there in Babe Ruth's time!!!
Birds' words fly, especially when you play for the Red Sox or the Mets - great rivals of the Yankees-!
They compete with imagination to make fun of the opposing players, even going so far as to learn Japanese to destabilize Ichiro Suzuki.
